Take a noise function n(p). Instead of sampling it at p, sample it at p + k·q(p), where q is another noise field. With k between 0.4 and 0.8 the result stops looking like clouds and starts looking like eroded rock.

Three colours, one of them nearly neutral. Everything else is a tint. Every time I break this rule the output looks like a screensaver from 2003.
